In October 2019, Google launched its much anticipated Pixel 4 series consisting of Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL. These phones are a nice combination of design and specs that you could want from a flagship. And like always, Google seems to have paid specific attention to the camera setup, which is being described as the best unit in the Android world. The extent at which this Google Pixel phone has been able to meet the expectations of Google Pixel fans is quite an interesting discussion. So let’s get started. Design Google has brought some unique upgrades in the design of the Google Pixel 4 series. The company has apparently backtracked from the concept of giving this phone a sleek design, and maybe for good reasons. The design of this phone is more functional than aesthetics. Matte finish on the back and a rubberized coating on the metal rim, which runs along the circumference of the phone, are the signature design changes which have been made in this series of Pixel phones. The design of both Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL is the same apart from the size difference; i.e. Pixel 4XL is bigger phone. The dimensions of Google Pixel 4 are 147.1 x 68.8 x 8.2mm, whereas the Pixel 4XL comes with the dimensions of 160.4 x 75.1 x 8.2mm The shape of camera bump seems to be a result of an inspiration from iPhone 11 series. And the number of lenses in this unit is 2. The front of this phone has been simplified well enough. Google Pixel 3 had a very thick bezel on the top, while Pixel 3XL had a notch. And overall design of both of the phones didn’t get a pretty good reception. Both Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL do not use any notch. There is a ‘forehead’ on the top of the screen, but this top bezel is not as thicker as the one in Google Pixel 3. The reason for using this bezel instead of going with a complete edge-to-edge or notch based design is that Google wanted to use a number of sensors alongside selfie camera lens. The most notable sensor is the Soli which is a motion sensing radar chip. Display Looking at the physical size difference between Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL, you can presume that there must be a size difference between the screens of both phones. And that assumption is just right. The display specifications of Google Pixel 4 are 5.7-inches, Full HD+, 90Hz; while Pixel 4XL has a screen based on 6.3-inches, Quad HD+, 90Hz display. Both of the phones use OLED panels. The display specs of Google Pixel 4XL certain look better than Pixel 4 but you are not going to feel the difference while viewing content. Pixel 4XL is certainly the better choice if you like bigger screens. Performance Both Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL are equipped with Snapdragon 855 chip which has been used in the majority of Android flagships released in 2019. The performance of these phones is further boosted with a 6GB RAM module. Things look even better with a 90Hz screen which turns out to be a true representation of the processing capability of both the phones. Battery Battery performance is not the strongest suit of these phones. Pixel 4 comes equipped with a 2800mAh battery which is certainly a weak link according to the 2019 flagship standards. Pixel 4XL is equipped with a better 3700mAh battery unit but as compared to the other larger phones in the market, it has failed to impress the fans who consider good battery performance a must. Camera
Looking at the hardware specifications of Pixel 4/4XL camera setup, it sounds pretty much like the camera systems used in other smartphones. It doesn’t have more than two cameras on the rear. But from the perspective of camera performance, Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL are the best handsets that you can have. The iPhone 11 Pro preforms just a bit better than Pixel 4 series in this department but you have got to keep the Apple’s traditional approach towards innovations in consideration. Pixel 4 phones provide great stills in both high and low light. The video shooting performance is also good but it is not that up to the higher standards which are achieved by camera setup’s still photography.
